What to Expect at the Comprehensive Exam

Think of it as an intricate fact-finding mission.

In about 1 hour, the doctor will:

  • Review of your medical and dental history
  • Take a digital full mouth series of 18 x-rays to check for tooth decay                                                                                           (Digital radiography reduces radiation by as much as 80 percent, compared to traditional x-rays.)
  • Perform a complete gum inspection including gum/bone measurements
  • A cursory TMJ analysis (Temporal Mandibular Joint)  usually treatable w/a Night Guard
  • An oral cancer exam
  • A head and neck soft tissue exam
  • Initial cosmetic consultation
  • Computerized dental charting (including new and old cavities, cracks, fractures, missing teeth, worn out fillings, crowns, etc.)
  • Occlusion evaluation (how your teeth fit together)

If you are interested, we may also educate you with:

  • Tooth shade for whitening
  • Intraoral pictures of your teeth (so you can see what we see)
  • Orthodontic evaluation
  • Pain analysis
  • Diet analysis (for sugar consumption)
  • Habits analysis (such as clenching, grinding, tobacco use)

Upon conclusion you will have a personalized treatment plan showing any findings.  If any treatment is required, your investment will be estimated.

Teeth cleanings are not included during this appointment.  As you can see, the above list is extensive and thus the exam takes a bit of time.  We offer several types of cleanings and we must determine which is appropriate for you.

We follow OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) & ADA (American Dental Association) Infection Control Guidelines
